President Xi's Mandarin Collar Mismatch

The Spanish royals, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, recently hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan in Spain. President Xi’s attire first caught my father’s attention—”Why is he dressed like a priest?” I had to take a closer look. Yes, it looks like President Xi is dressed like a catholic priest, but what is really going on here?

President Xi is wearing a band collar shirt underneath a Mandarin collar jacket. That’s why you see the small square of white fabric underneath the opening of the Mandarin collar. What would have been a more appropriate choice is a Mandarin collar shirt under a Mandarin collar jacket. The Mandarin collar shirt doesn’t have a button at the collar, so there is a gap in the shirt collar, as there is in the jacket collar. Remember, it is important to match the collar of the shirt to the collar of the jacket.

This type of basic style mistake is why many high profile people use personal stylists and image consultants.

I recommend Carla Mathis of The Style Core for in-person or virtual styling sessions because of her skill, her wisdom, and her heart. This is the blog post that led me to her.
